The Standard Life Investments Ryder Cup Index

Potential: Who will be on The 2016 Ryder Cup Teams?

Powered by Bloomberg Media Data Science.

In the spirit of competition embodied by The Ryder Cup, Bloomberg Media Data Science has created The Standard Life Investments Ryder Cup Index to project which players will accumulate the points necessary to automatically qualify for the 2016 U.S. and European Teams.

The forecast is based on past individual performance and weighting of future point - rich events, with the previous two months’ performance as variables.

Analysis: How Data Drives the Index

A personalized time series regression was applied for each player using three variables:

1) Month over month percentage change in The Ryder Cup points earned in 2015.
2) The average of month over month percentage change, and;
3) Average monthly points earned.

Having established those parameters, a formula is employed using the previous month’s performance as the only variable, and projections are made through Aug. 28, the final date for earning points.

Davis Love III and Darren Clarke decide to share The Ryder Cup on stage.

Performance: How Will They Play at Hazeltine?

As the teams start to take shape over the summer, Index updates will also include data-based forecasts on selected players who might make the team, and how they might align for success at Hazeltine National, and in the match-play format of The Ryder Cup.

In the final update of The Standard Life Investments Ryder Cup Index, we’ll use data to forecast which side will take home the Cup. Along the way, Davis Love III and Darren Clarke will share insights about how they might incorporate various types of data into their strategy.
