Ethical

Putting your principles into practice

Ethical funds are a popular choice for people concerned about environmental and social issues. Investing ethically can provide the satisfaction that comes from putting personal values into practice, as well as offering the potential for financial return.

Our approach to ethical investments

We’ve long recognised the importance of providing you with a choice of funds, suited to your individual circumstances, objectives and preferences. In fact, it's now almost a decade since we launched our first ethical OEIC fund. We apply strict negative criteria to our ethical funds, so that if a company’s involved in any of the activities on our list, we won’t invest in it.

In other words, we offer you all the benefits of stock market investment while respecting your ethical principles. We’re also the only ethical fund provider to carry out an annual survey of ethical investor sentiment, since we’re keen to actively recognise and reflect your concerns.

Standard Life Ethical Funds Committee – Be Involved

The Standard Life Ethical Funds Committee meets quarterly to ensure that the Ethical Policy for the ethical funds is being applied. The Committee regularly invites experts on ethical issues to attend its meetings in order to provide current information on matters of interest to ethical investors. For example, the Ethical Committee has benefited from presentations by WWF, Global Witness and The Scottish Human Rights Commission, as well as discussions with representatives of companies held in the funds.

We currently have a vacancy on the Committee for an investor member. If you would like to know more about becoming a member of the Ethical Committee, you can write to the Ethical Committee Secretary, Julie McDowell, Standard Life Investments, 1 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2LL, or by emailing julie_mcdowell@standardlife.com.
